Lyrics
- A long long time ago
- I can still re-mem-ber how that ser-ver used to purr and sing
- And I knew if I had to fix that sys-tem's parts, pro-duc-tion mix,
- I'd have to shut it off for some time
- But the C-I-S-O mem-o made me shiv-er
- The B-I-A we must de-liv-er
- Bad news for all the ad-mins
- They could not fake one more step
- I can't re-mem-ber if I cried
- When I read the text to come in-side
- But some-thing touched me deep in-side
- The day our ser-ver died
- My my this new node went and died
- RAID and backups didn’t stack up and our app went offline
- Failover missed the heartbeat, kiss our uptime goodbye
- Yelling SLA today or you're fried
- Destruction of what's there undenied
- Did you write the patch in time
- Or trust AV to catch the crime
- When ransomware came knocking?
- Do you believe in least privilege
- Or give prod creds to the QA bridge
- And hope the auditors don’t say you're shocking?
- Now I know you’re in a panic state
- ’Cause DR tests were months too late
- We thought our snapshots saved us
- But retention never gave us
- A way to resurrect the node
- Logs corrupted, data overflowed
- It’s all a twisted, tragic ode
- The day our server died
- My my this new node went and died
- RAID and backups didn’t stack up and our app went offline
- Failover missed the heartbeat, kiss our uptime goodbye
- Yelling SLA today or you're fried
- Destruction of what's there undenied
- Now for ten years we've run the stack
- VMs nested on a nested rack
- But that was then…before the fire
- When the cooling failed at 2 AM
- And alerts got stuck in some DM
- And ops was home asleep, their phone on silent wire
- While SOC and NOC both passed the buck
- Said, “Try rebooting, push your luck,”
- Security said, “Contain it,”
- Infra yelled, “You can’t restrain it!”
- And while compliance choked on PCI
- We watched the dashboard flatline dry
- Rebuild scripts failed, we asked them why
- The day our server died
- My my this new node went and died
- RAID and backups didn’t stack up and our app went offline
- Failover missed the heartbeat, kiss our uptime goodbye
- Yelling SLA today or you're fried
- Destruction of what's there undenied
- Helter skelter in a hot data center
- Engineers praying to a metrics mentor
- Eight hours outage and climbing higher
- We tried containers, we tried the cloud
- We tried to scale but weren’t allowed
- ’Cause finance cut our budget to a wire
- And as I watched the final logs
- Scroll past like ghosts in dusty cogs
- I swore we'd build it stronger
- Zero trust and tests much longer
- But the CISO said with hardened eyes
- “Resilience fails when you rely
- On hope instead of verified”
- The day our server died
- So my my this old node went and died
- But we’ll rebuild it with some rigor and a DR guide
- Next time failover hits, we won’t be terrified
- Singing uptime’s not a prayer, it’s applied
- Uptime’s not a prayer, it’s applied
